On Adapting an ICALL System to Different Pedagogical Contexts
نویسنده
چکیده
In recent years, a group of researchers in Intelligent Computer-Assisted Language Learning (ICALL) has emphasized the importance of developing ICALL systems that can be incorporated into real-life language programs (Heift, 2003; Amaral and Meurers, 2006; Amaral, 2007) or used for specific pedagogical goals (Nagata, 2002; Dodigovic, 2005). Continuing this line of research and following the arguments in favor of the role of pedagogical concerns and SLA research in the development of ICALL technology (Amaral and Meurers, 2007a), this paper explores what is involved in adapting ICALL systems to different instructional settings, such as regular classes or individualized instruction at different universities as well as distance learning programs. Going beyond the single pedagogical context envisaged in the above-mentioned research, we investigate the impact that these different pedagogical contexts can have on the development, integration, and reuse of ICALL resources.

The Organisation of Turn-Taking and Sequence in Language Classrooms
In Chapter 1 I introduced the principles of CA methodology in relation to ordinary conversation, whereas chapter 2 introduced an institutional discourse perspective. In this chapter I apply these principles and this perspective to the institutional setting of the L2 classroom and to the organisation of turn-taking and sequence in particular. The overall argument of this chapter is that there is...
متن کاملComputer-assisted Grammar Practice for Oral Communication
Gaining the ability to speak proficiently is an important goal in second language learning, and grammatical correctness is an important dimension of oral proficiency. To acquire the ability to produce grammatically correct speech in everyday conversational situations, learners must practice producing speech until they can do so with little to no concious effort. For maximum pedagogical effectiv...
متن کاملOn using intelligent computer-assisted language learning in real-life foreign language teaching and learning
This paper explores the motivation and prerequisites of a successful integration of Intelligent Computer-Assisted Language Learning (ICALL) tools into current foreign language teaching and learning (FLTL) practice. We focus on two aspects, which we argue to be important for effective ICALL system development and use: (i) the relationship between activity design and restrictions needed to make n...

Effective pedagogical practice promotes the achievement of students and builds up confidence of the teachers in teaching. The major cause for the gap in pedagogical practices can be attributed to the lack of pedagogical competence. The present study employed a mixed method research approach to examine Iranian high school English Language teachers’ perception of pedagogical competence in two pha...
متن کاملError Analysis and Handling in Arabic ICALL Systems
Arabic is a Semitic language that is rich in its morphology and syntax. The very numerous and complex grammar rules of the language could be confusing even for Arabic native speakers. Many Arabic intelligent computerassisted language-learning (ICALL) systems have neither deep error analysis nor sophisticated error handling. In this paper, we report an attempt at developing an error analyzer and...
